Incessant Scholastic accomplishments will make Aligarh Muslim University remain an Institution of Excellence”- Mr. Sunil Kumar Singh

Aligarh: Six days short term course on E-resources for Research organized by the Department of Library and Information Science, Aligarh Muslim University in collaboration with UGC Academic Staff College concluded by the Valedictory function held at the Audio Visual Hall of Department of Geology on 21st Dec. 2011. Dr. Naushad Ali P.M, Chairman, Dept. of Library & Information Science welcomed the gathering and briefed about the workshop. The valedictory function was presided over by Prof. Anwar Jahan Zuberi, Dean Faculty of Social Science and Mr. Sunil Kumar Singh, Superintendent of Police, Aligarh City was the Chief Guest of the Function. During the speech, Mr. Sunil Kumar Singh stated that excellence of such intellectual exercises will shine the future of academic leadership of the University. Despite of advancement of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), E-resources are least used due to the lack of knowledge to browse the same to get relevant information. Unfortunately both our educators and administrators have not fully succeeded to explore the plethora of information available on the net.  Such type of training programme will help our academician  to make optimum use of web based resources.  If such kind of intellectual activities continue, the university will cherish to remain at the helm of the higher education in the co During the presidential address, Prof. Anwar Jahan Zuberi, the Dean, enlightened that even the educators find it difficult to locate most appropriate databases or resources to search for relevant information for their research and developmental activities. The course will help to solve this problem in some extent. She also appreciated the Department for selecting such a time demanding theme for this short term course conducted for the teachers of Faculty of Social Science of the University.  More than forty five faculties, working professionals and research scholars were rigorously skilled over six days in total of eighteen sessions conducted in Auditorium of Faculty of Social Science, Computer Lab of the Department of Library and Information Science and Audio Visual Hall of Department of Geology, Aligarh Muslim University. Prof. Jagtar Singh, Dr. Shailendra Kumar, Mr. S. Mustafa Zaidi, Dr. Naushad Ali. P.M, Dr. Sudharma Haridasan, and Dr. Nabi Hasan acted as resource persons in the course.
Mr. Sunil Kumar Singh and Prof. Anwar Jahan Zuberi distributed the certificates and CD contained course materials to the participants. Dr.  Reshma Jamal, Academic Staff College extended the vote of thanks in the function.

Short Term Course on e-resources in social sciences for research

       A six day Short Term Course on e-resources in social sciences for research is organised by UGC Staff college and Dept. of Lib & Info Science, AMU. The course targets the faculty members and research scholars of the faculty of Social Sciences. The content of the course includes online resources, e-resources in social science, e-journal consortia, design of e-resources, web resources and services, online resources: issues and challenges, measurement of  e-resources, information use and ethics, plagiarism and copyright, effective literature search,  e-resources in  open access environment  institutional repositories, bibliographic standards.
    Experts like Dr. Sheilendra Kumar, Dr. Jagtar Singh, Dr. Nabi Hasan, Prof. NR Satyanarayana, Dr. Madhusudan, Dr. Naushad Ali, Dr. Sudharma Haridasan and Prof. Mustafa Zaidi are giving classes. The course started on 16th December, Friday 2011.

REPORT
“TWO DAY WORKSHOP ON WEB CONTENT MANAGEMENT CONCLUDED IN ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY”
National Workshop on Web Content Management (WCM 2011) organized by the Department of Library and Information Science, Aligarh Muslim University got off with recitation from the Quran. Dr. Naushad Ali P.M, Chairman & Coordinator of the workshop welcomed the gathering and gave an introduction about the workshop. The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. P.K Abdul Azis, Vice Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University. He appreciated the efforts made by the department of Library and Information Science holding such a wonderful workshop on such a novel theme of the time. Subject Information Gateway in Information Technology (SIGIT--www.itsubjectgateway.com-- funded by DST, Govt. of India) also launched by the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University in the inaugural function. During the inaugural speech, Prof. Abdul Azis said that the Aligarh Muslim University has set another milestone in the field of Information and Communication Technology with the launch of the Subject Gateway in Information Technology (SIGIT) and the 3G/Wimax service. Prof. Azis appreciated the efforts of the Department of Library and Information Science in developing SIGIT, hub of Knowledge. He said that the present era is information based and we are living in a world where only those individuals or nations will achieve success that have knowledge power.
            Prof. P.B Mangla, former member, National Knowledge Commission stated that Users find it difficult to locate most appropriate databases or resources to search for relevant information according to their need. In this situation portals act as an intermediary to solve the problem by customizing information content to meet specific user need. He further said that technology is the key to access the information and its management is vital for easy access.     Dr. R.K Chadha, Joint Secretary, Parliament of India appreciated the department in selecting such an apt theme of the time for the workshop. He said that the technology revolution has brought many changes to the way libraries and library staff provides information to users. Librarian should use modern tools to provide quicker, more complete and more sophisticated services to the users.  Prof. Anwar Jahan Zuberi, Dean Faculty of Social Science enlightened that users find it difficult to locate most appropriate databases or resources to search for relevant information to their need.  Web Content Management tools will help to solve this problem in some extent. Prof. Shabahat Husain extended the vote of thanks in the inaugural function of the workshop.
            More than seventy working librarians all over the country were rigorously trained over two days in total of eight sessions conducted in Computer Lab, Computer Science Department and Audio Visual Hall, Department of Geology, Aligarh Muslim University. Dr. R.K Chadha, Dr. Madhusudhan, Mr. S. Mustafa Zaidi, Dr. Monawwer Eqbal and Mr. Nitin Swaroop were trainers in the workshop. Valedictory function was presided over by Prof. V.K Abdul Jaleel, Registrar, Aligarh Muslim University on 4th Dec. 2011. In the presidential address, Prof. Jaleel stated that training programs in the form of Workshops are crucial in developing  the skills of the library  professionals  as only a competent person will be able to cater to the increasingly demanded as well as complicated  ways and means of information provision. Dr. Naushad Ali P.M Chairman & Coordinator of the workshop welcomed all the dignitaries of the gathering.  Prof. S.M Shafi, Head, Dept. of Library Science, University of Kashmir, was the Chief Guest and Dr. Jamil Ahmad Qureshy, Director of Libraries, PMBFU, Al Khobar, KSA was the Guest of Honour.  Prof. V.K Abdul Jaleel, Registrar distributed the certificates to the participants. Launching of Subject Information Gateway (SIGIT)


Department of Library and Information Science, Aligarh Muslim University is developing Subject Information Gateway in Information Technology (SIGIT), first full-fledged subject information gateway exclusively in the field of Information Technology (IT) funded by Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt. of India. SIGIT comprehensively covers all areas of Information Technology like e-journals, e-books, IT schools and their curriculum, databases, free and open source software, research projects, electronic theses and dissertations, programming languages, forthcoming conferences/ workshops, fellowships and grants, training programmes in IT, etc. and it indents to cater the information needs of the specialists who are directly or indirectly concerned with IT as a subject or an activity. It will be also useful for scientists, academicians, researchers, authors, students, etc. who are engaged in IT based study/research work.

About the Workshop
Information Technology has made advances over the last several years. As the World Wide Web grows, it is becoming more and more complex for
humans to efficiently find and exploit the information. The underlying idea of having a description of data available on the Web is organized in such a way as to be used by machines. Therefore management of information on web is crucially important for better utilization of resources.
The information professionals in all kinds of information warehouses have to apply the tools and techniques of ICT to meet the changing requirements of the users by innovating its procedures and systems. This workshop aims to help the library professionals to get an overview and hands on experience on designing library web portals and developing subject gateways. This workshop intends to sharpen the skills of information professionals to present information effectively using internet technology.

Web Portal Designing
Web portal is a web site that functions as a point of access to information in the World Wide Web. A portal presents information from diverse sources in a unified way. This workshop will give hands on training to most of the activities involved in designing a library web portal.

Subject Gateways
Gateways are the Internet search tools to help people find resources on the Internet. They are Internet based services designed to help users locate high quality information that is available on the Internet.

Ph.D Viva-voce


Mr. Naved Ahmad, Research scholar of this department successfully defended his PhD thesis in a Viva-voce examination held in this department on 14th November, 2011. He conducted research on 'Information Seeking Behavior of students and faculty members in IIMs of Culcutta, Lucknow and Ahmadabad: A survey ' under the supervision of Dr. Nishat Fathima. Prof. SM Shafi, Head,  DLIS, University of Kashmir, Srinagar  was the examiner for his Viva-Voce.

Presently Mr Naved is working as Patent Searcher in King Saud University, Riyad, Saudi Arabia. He has contributed a number of research papers in national and international journals and he is the editor of International Research: Journal of Library and Information Science (Bi-annual).

We congratulate and wish him all the success in his career.

International Open Access Week - 2011 Panel Discussion 31 October 2011

OVERVIEW
International Open Access Week, the annual event celebrating the global movement towards Open Access (OA) to research and scholarship, kicks off for the fifth time on Monday, October 24. Coordinated by SPARC and organized by more than 2,000 advocates in countries around the world, the event provides an opportunity to learn about the benefits of Open Access, share new ideas and strategies, and inspire wider participation in establishing Open Access as the norm in scholarly communication.
INAUGURATION
A panel discussion on Open Access Movement on the auspicious of International Open Access Week was organized by the Department of Library and Information Science, Aligarh Muslim University got off with recitation from the  holy Quran. Dr. Naushad Ali P.M, Programme Coordinator and Chairman of the Department of Library and Information Science gave an introduction about the open access movement and its 5th celebration of International Open Access Week from 24th to 30th October 2011.
Prof. Shabahat Husain, Librarian-in-Charge, Maulana Azad Library, AMU inaugurated the panel discussion. During the inaugural speech Prof. Shabahat Husain called upon all the departments in the university to create departmental repositories carrying the publication of faculties and research scholars. He appreciated the efforts made by the Department holding such a wonderful discussion on such a novel theme of the time.  He further stated that the Department should take initiative to congregate the publication of teachers of the department and put it on institutional repository on open access mode. For the benefit of larger community, he also demanded to take effort in creating repository of the publication of the whole academic staff of the University. He also mentioned the endeavor he had taken to download more than 2 lakhs e-books in Maulana Azad Library and to inform the faculty members of the University to utilize the opportunity during the e-book fair at free of cost.
Before handing over the podium to the discussion, Programme Coordinator and Chairman of the Department Dr. Naushad Ali P.M proudly announced that the Department will soon release an Intuitional repository of publication of teachers of Aligarh Muslim University under the name “Knowledge Garden”. He further informed that the Department could download more than one hundred e-theses related to library and information field during the fair.
PANEL DISCUSSION
The panel discussion aimed to provide a platform to discuss and share different aspects of open access and its issues and challenges in the present era. Dr. Sudharma Haridasan, Associate Professor, took the lead playing the role of moderator of the discussion. The panelists were Mr. Shibu K M, Guest Faculty, Department of Library and Information Science, Mr. Mohamed Musthafa K, Mr. Jafar Iqbal, Mr. Sheikh Imran Mr. Muzamil Mushtaq and Mrs. Shazia Khan, Research Scholars of Department of Library and Information Science.
At the outset of the discussion Dr. Sudharma Haridasan invited Mr. Sheikh Imran for the discussion. During his speech he demanded the academic community to negotiate with the publishing industry to retain a certain portion of the copy right so that the author would be in position to publish his or her scholar output on open access mode.
Mr. Jafar Iqbal briefly presented the concept of open access, its development, ways to achieve open access and some of the international and national level contributions to open access. He further stated the open access is a one of the powerful tool to increase the citation of the scholarly publication and listed some of the institutes which are already accepted open access policy in their publications.
Mrs. Shazia Khan concentrated to disclose the issues related to Quality assurance of the open access publications. She has mentioned some measures and ways out to resolve and improve the qualities of the open access publication. Mr. Muzamil Mushtaq strived to bring out the both the positive and negative aspects of the open publishing mode. Mr. Mohamed Mustafa K stated some of the issues related to the open access publishing. He argued that open access will not replace traditional publishing industry, instead both would go simultaneously. He further said that open source is a flow and it will go on in the coming future also.
Mr. Shibu K M started his talk with a famous saying of Adam Smith “A good supply of water would not develop a city” but a good supply of information would develop the country. He marvelously presented the concept of open access and its both roads of pubishing viz Gold and Green roads. He further raised the wind by blowing the issues in open access like peer review problem, quality, psychological fear of loosing intellects etc.
Moderator Dr. Sudharma Hardisan comprehending the discussion saying open access has a wide application and we cannot rule out the problems of the copyright and other peer review issues. Coordinator Dr. Naushad Ali extended vote of thanks.  The program brought to a close with refreshment arranged in the department.

Best Paper Award

One of our Research Scholar Mr. Mohamed Musthafa bagged the Best Paper Award at National Seminar on Knowledge Management held at INMANTEC, Gaziabad on 24 Sept. 2011 for his research paper entitled 'Social Networking experience of university students on Facebook'.
It is the third time Mr. Musthafa winning the Best Paper Awards for presenting research papers.

COLLECTIONS DEVELOPMENT OF MAULANA AZAD LIBRARY (AMU) AND CENTRAL LIBRARY OF UNIVERSITY OF DELHI: A COMPARATIVE STUDY

Abstract


The collections development includes planning for a systematic and rational construction of the general collection. The process includes several activities such as the user’s needs, evaluation of current collections, determination of a selection policy, management of selected items, analysis and storage of collection items incorporated into the planning and resource sharing. Thus the collections development isn't a singular activity, but a group of activities. Organizationally, academic libraries have at least two structured patterns for the collections development: centralized and decentralized systems. In a centralized collections development the full responsibility is of the central library, for the other hand the decentralized collections development are the responsibilities of the sector or department academic. This research was conducted to obtain an overview of the collections development in the Maulana Azad Library of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and in the Central Library of Delhi University (DU).

Two-Day Librarian Development Programme (LDP)

Librarianship is a noble profession. Its’ prime motto is to provide services in the best possible manner to the users. Librarian’s prime concern is also directly linked to Customer satisfaction.

As we all Library Professionals are blessed with subject knowledge and experience, usually the lacking part, which we come across, is the art of presenting ourselves in front of others. It would be possible if a library professional has thorough knowledge of managerial skills. A Librarian who has managerial skills performs better in his profession. Many librarians in the profession are not able to meet user expectations due to lack of Managerial skills.

Keeping this thought in our mind we tried to give a platform to the Library Professionals to groom themselves and learn few things on Managerial Skills. So, it is our pleasure to share with you that INDUS WORLD SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, Greater Noida in collaboration with MANAGEMENT LIBRARIES NETWORK (MANLIBNET) is going to organize a Two-Day Librarian Development Programme (LDP) on "Managerial Skills for Library Professionals" for Library & Information Professionals on September 9-10th, 2011. I hope it would be awakening to the inner potential of the Library Professionals of India.  This will enrich the experience of the participants and it is expected that they will return to their workplaces as changed professionals who will fulfill the expectations of their users and become the true professionals they are meant to be.

the following positions on contract basis for a period of six months. The candidates must report sharp at

1. a). Name of Post : Technical Assistant
b). Nos. of Post : 2(two)
c). Salary : Rs.18,000/- per month (consolidated)
d). Essential Qualifications :


1. M.Lib.Sc./MLISc. or equivalent with 50% marks.
OR
Master’s Degree in Arts/Science/Commerce or any other discipline with 50% and
B.Lib.Sc./B.L.I.Sc. with 50% marks.
2. Computer Science paper at Graduate/PG level or Six months computer sicnce
course from a recognized institution.


OR
BCA/MCA or equivalent (Preference will be given to those who have Degree or
experience in Library).
3. Excellent speaking and writing skills in English

e). Desirable Qualifications :
1. Candidates having social science background, good knowledge of Library
Digitization, Computerization, library software and English will be preferred.

Darwin’s personal library now available online


London, June 23: 

Notes and comments scribbled by naturalist Charles Darwin on the pages and in the margins of his personal library have been made available online for the first time.

Darwin’s personal scientific library, the majority of which is held at Cambridge University Library, has been digitized in a collaborative effort involving Cambridge, the Darwin Manuscripts Project at the American Museum of Natural History, the Natural History Museum, and the Biodiversity Heritage Library.

A release by the University of Cambridge said that in total, Darwin’s library amounted to 1,480 books, of which 730 contain abundant research notes in their margins. These annotated books are now in the process of being digitized.

The first phase of this project has just been completed, with 330 of the most heavily annotated books launched online at the Biodiversity Heritage Library for all to read athttp://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/collection/darwinlibrary.
